Quick answers (top FAQs)
What is EchoVault?
EchoVault is a digital legacy platform. While you are alive, you train an AI echo of yourself through guided check-in conversations—and optionally clone your voice and video likeness. You designate Echo Custodians who can connect with your echo after you pass or after a long period of inactivity.
Where do I use EchoVault?
- Web app: https://app.echovault.me
- Mobile app: EchoVault for iOS (Android when available)—same account as the web app
- Marketing / support: https://echovault.me
How do I get help?
Email support@echovault.me. We read every message and typically respond within 1–2 business days.
What are the subscription tiers?
| Tier | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Echo Seed | Free | Unlimited check-ins and personality training; custodians get text-only conversations |
| Echo Voice | $12/month | Everything in Echo Seed + voice clone + custodian voice calls (monthly usage limits apply) |
| Echo Prime | $18/month (after any included trial) | Everything in Echo Voice + video avatar + custodian video calls |
| Video Avatar Setup | $99 one-time (iOS) | One-time purchase to unlock video avatar training; includes 3 months of Echo Prime, then Echo Prime continues at the then-current price unless cancelled |
Each month you pay on a paid tier banks one month of free custodian access for after you pass.

Check-ins and training your echo
What is a check-in?
A check-in is a guided conversation with EchoVault’s AI biographer. Your answers become memories and personality traits that shape how your echo speaks and responds later.
Think of check-ins as the most important part of EchoVault—voice and video add fidelity, but your stories are the soul of your echo.
How to complete a check-in
- From Home, tap It’s time to check in (or open the Chat tab).
- Read the opening question and reply honestly—you can type or use voice input where available.
- Continue the conversation for several exchanges (aim for at least 5 back-and-forth turns before ending).
- Tap End Session when you are done. EchoVault extracts memories automatically.
How often should I check in?
Set a rhythm that works for you—weekly is a good default. More check-ins mean a richer, more accurate echo. Your Home screen shows streaks and progress.
Can I add memories without a full check-in?
Yes. From Echo Hub (Clone tab), use Quick Memory Input to dictate or type a standalone memory.
What improves my echo’s quality?
- Regular check-ins over months and years
- Specific stories (names, places, feelings) rather than one-word answers
- Varied topics—childhood, work, relationships, values, humor
- Completing voice training (Echo Voice+) and video avatar training (Echo Prime)

Voice clone setup
Voice cloning is available on Echo Voice and Echo Prime.
Before you record
- Find a quiet room with minimal echo or background noise.
- Use your normal speaking voice—no whispering or shouting.
- Hold the phone at a comfortable distance; do not cover the microphone.
Recording process
On iPhone: You will record three short prompts. The app merges them into one sample (about 2–3 minutes total) before upload.
On Android: You will record one longer passage (about 75–90 seconds of reading).
After recording, the app uploads your audio and sends it for training. Training usually takes 1–2 minutes but can take longer at busy times. You can leave the screen and return—status updates automatically.
When training finishes
- Status changes to Ready in Echo Hub.
- Use Test playback or start a voice call to hear your clone.
Re-training your voice
You can re-train your voice clone once per subscription period. Start a new recording from Voice Training in Echo Hub if your voice has changed significantly or the first attempt failed.
Voice training failed—common causes
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Background noise | Re-record in a quieter space |
| Too short | Ensure all prompts are completed (iOS) or read the full Android script |
| Upload error | Check internet connection and try again |
| Stuck on “Training” | Wait 10–15 minutes, then force-quit and reopen the app; email support if still stuck |

Video avatar setup (including consent)
Video avatar creation is available after Video Avatar Setup ($99 one-time on iOS) or on Echo Prime. This is the most technical step in EchoVault—and the one we get the most questions about.
Overview
You will record a 1–5 minute video of your face and voice. The video is used by our partner Tavus to create a video replica for live video conversations with your echo.
Two things make training succeed or fail:
- Technical quality (lighting, framing, duration, format)
- The consent statement spoken verbatim at the very beginning of the recording
If either is wrong, training may fail or be rejected—even after a successful upload.
The consent statement (read this carefully)
Tavus requires that your training video begins with an exact consent phrase. You must speak these words out loud, on camera, as the first thing in the recording—before any other speech.
Replace [your full name] with your legal or preferred full name (the name you use on your EchoVault profile):
I, [your full name], am currently speaking and give consent to Tavus to create an AI clone of me by using the audio and video samples I provide. I understand that this AI clone can be used to create videos that look and sound like me.
Example (if your name is Maria Chen):
I, Maria Chen, am currently speaking and give consent to Tavus to create an AI clone of me by using the audio and video samples I provide. I understand that this AI clone can be used to create videos that look and sound like me.
Rules for the consent statement
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Say the exact words in order | Paraphrase (“I agree to let Tavus clone me…”) |
Use your real full name in place of [your full name] | Leave the placeholder phrase “your full name” in the sentence |
| Speak clearly at normal pace | Rush or mumble |
| Make consent the first words in the video | Greet the camera (“Hi!”) before consent |
| Have the script visible off-camera | Read from text on the same screen you are recording from (you cannot see it while filming yourself) |
How to view the consent statement while recording
Because you cannot read text on the same phone screen that is recording your face, plan how you will read the script before you press Record.
Option A — Print it (recommended)
- Open Video Avatar Setup in the app and copy the consent text (or copy from this page).
- Replace
[your full name]with your name. - Print the statement in large, readable font—or write it by hand in large letters.
- Tape the paper above or beside your camera (eye level or slightly above).
- Do a practice read once before recording.
- Start recording, look at the camera lens, and read the consent statement first.
Option B — Second device (tablet, laptop, or another phone)
- Display the consent statement on a second screen positioned next to your camera lens (not far to the side—your eyes should still appear to look at the viewer).
- Increase brightness and font size.
- Turn off notifications on the second device.
- Start recording on your phone, then read from the second screen.
Option C — Teleprompter app (advanced)
Use a teleprompter app on a second device placed directly behind or above your recording camera so your gaze stays natural.
Option D — Memorize (only if you know it cold)
Memorization works for some people, but one missed word can invalidate the recording. If you memorize, rehearse the full sentence—including “Tavus” and “AI clone”—at least five times out loud.
Full recording script (after consent)
After the consent statement, follow this structure (about 2–3 minutes total):
| Phase | Duration | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Consent | ~15–20 seconds | Read the consent statement verbatim (above) |
| 2. Natural speech | ~1 minute | Talk naturally—tell a short story, describe your day, or share a memory. Vary your expressions. |
| 3. Neutral silence | ~1 minute | Stay on camera, face relaxed, silent. Minimal movement. This helps the AI model your neutral expression. |
Technical requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Duration | 1–5 minutes total (mobile app); web app requires at least 2 minutes |
| File size | Up to 250 MB |
| Resolution | 720p or higher recommended |
| Framing | Face centered, looking at the camera |
| Background | Plain, neutral—no busy patterns, other people, or moving objects |
| Lighting | Light facing you, not behind you (avoid windows at your back) |
| Audio | Quiet room—no music, wind, or background voices |
| Format | MP4 (H.264) preferred; the mobile app converts automatically |
Step-by-step: record on mobile
- Purchase Video Avatar Setup if you have not already (Profile → Subscription, or during onboarding).
- Open Echo Hub → Video Avatar → follow the on-screen guidelines.
- Prepare your consent script using one of the options above.
- Tap Record Video or Choose from Library (a recent, unedited clip can work if it meets all requirements including consent at the start).
- Keep the app open during upload and conversion—large videos can take several minutes.
- Wait for Training status. Replica creation typically takes 15–60+ minutes.
- When status is Ready, test with a video call from Echo Hub.
Step-by-step: upload on web
- Sign in at app.echovault.me.
- Go to video avatar training.
- Select an MP4 or WebM file (at least 2 minutes). MOV files may need browser conversion first.
- Upload and wait for training to complete.
Video training failed—common causes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rejected / failed after upload | Consent missing or not verbatim | Re-record with consent as the first words |
| Rejected / failed | Face not visible, poor lighting, or multiple people | Re-record alone in a well-lit space |
| Too short | Under minimum duration | Record at least 1 minute on mobile, 2 minutes on web |
| Upload stuck | Connection dropped | Stable Wi‑Fi, keep app open, retry |
| “Converting” for a long time | Large iPhone HEVC file | Normal on first attempt—wait; do not force-quit |
| Training stuck for hours | Provider backlog or invalid source video | Email support@echovault.me with your account email |

Echo Custodians and legacy access
What is an Echo Custodian?
An Echo Custodian is someone you trust—a family member, partner, or close friend—whom you authorize to interact with your echo after you pass or after EchoVault detects 12 months of check-in inactivity.
How to designate a custodian
- Open Contacts in the app.
- Add or edit a contact.
- Enable Posthumous access / Echo Custodian.
- Choose their access level (text, voice, or video) based on your subscription tier.
- Optionally send an invitation email explaining their role.
Important: Custodians do not have access while you are actively using EchoVault. Access activates through the Deceased Protocol (see below).
What custodians receive
When access activates, custodians get an email with:
- How long their free access lasts (based on months you paid on Echo Voice or Echo Prime)
- Which modes they can use (text / voice / video)
- A secure link:
https://echovault.me/custodian/onboard?token=…&userId=…
Custodian onboarding
- Tap the link in the email (or copy it if the app is not installed yet).
- Install EchoVault from the App Store or Google Play if prompted.
- Create an account or sign in with the email address you were invited with.
- Open the Custodian dashboard for the echo you were invited to.
If the link does not open the app: Install the app first, then tap the email link again—or paste the full URL (including token and userId) into Safari/Chrome.
What custodians can do
| Your tier | Custodian access |
|---|---|
| Echo Seed | Text conversations only |
| Echo Voice | Text + voice calls |
| Echo Prime | Text + voice + video calls |
Monthly usage limits apply to voice and video calls (see Section 7). Text chat is unlimited.
Legacy credit (free access period)
Each month you pay for Echo Voice or Echo Prime while alive adds one month of free custodian access after the Deceased Protocol activates.
Example: 18 months of Echo Voice → custodians receive 18 months of free voice + text access.
After the free period, custodians may subscribe to an Echo Custodian plan to continue.
Deceased Protocol—what triggers it?
EchoVault monitors check-in activity. If you have designated custodians and have not completed a check-in for 12 consecutive months, the system may mark your account under the Deceased Protocol and notify your custodians.
If you are still alive and receive a custodian notification by mistake, sign in to EchoVault immediately. Active check-ins reactivate your account and notify custodians that you are still active.
I am a custodian and my access expired
When free access ends, you will see subscription options in the custodian dashboard:
- Echo Custodian Voice — text + voice (higher monthly minute allowance)
- Echo Custodian Prime — text + voice + video
Subscribe through the in-app checkout flow, or email support@echovault.me if you need help.

Using voice and video calls
Owner test calls
From Echo Hub, after voice or video training completes, use Test voice call or Test video call to talk with your own echo.
How voice calls work
- Push-to-talk: Hold the button, speak, release to send.
- Your speech is transcribed, answered by your personality AI, and spoken in your cloned voice.
- Requires Echo Voice or Echo Prime.
How video calls work
- Opens a live video conversation with your Tavus avatar.
- Requires Echo Prime and completed video avatar training.
- Allow camera and microphone permissions when prompted.
Custodian usage limits (free access period)
| Mode | Monthly limit per custodian |
|---|---|
| Text | Unlimited |
| Voice | 20 minutes |
| Video | 10 minutes |
You will see a warning near 80% usage. Calls stop at 100% until the next month or a custodian subscription upgrade.
Tips for better calls
- Use headphones to reduce echo.
- Speak in full sentences—short phrases transcribe more reliably.
- Video calls need stable Wi‑Fi or strong LTE/5G.
